ethical dilemma.

So I get an email on Monday saying that the wabbits are selling soooo fast they want more more more- very excited email with lots of !!!... so of course I read this and get really excited and come home and start working out how many I can make with the fabric I have and when I am going to do this, canceling things I had planned basically working myself into quite a frenzy really...so I was up late Monday night and last night cutting and sewing and stressing a bit to get them done and then this morning I woke up and thought: What the hell am I doing? Why am I making more? Will I be anymore excited if I sell 40 rather than 30? No. I am just getting caught up in it all. Why stress myself out to make some more money....isn't the whole point of being being creative to BE creative, the money is a bonus- I actually love sewing but how much am I going to love it if I focus on the cash rather than the craft?

This has always been a side project for me - I love my other job but I LOVE making things and selling things. I love seeing peoples faces when I have made them something special and they really love it. I love making a bit of extra money doing something I am passionate about...

I feel like I am doing the right thing here but what do people think? Have I cut my nose to spite my face? Have I missed a golden opportunity? Or have I stuck to my principles albeit sacrificing some ( much needed ) funds? I will never be a great business woman...

  1. That is the hard part about being creative - We want to keep the fun in what we do but it is hard to turn down the opportunities to make money - as we all need that too. i think your wabbits will be in high demand at the moment because of easter. Maybe you can just set yourself a realistic amount to make each month that you are happy with. If they get is such high demand you can put the price up.

  2. You are the only one who can answer your questions! It's always a be careful what you wish for type of thing! The rabbits are great, I am so chuffed they are doing so well for you!

  3. Ahhhh the eternal crafters question........ I'm with you - if the fun is gone it doesn't make sense anymore. If you are not relying on the dollars than enjoy what you do!

  4. This is the perennial question. If you work very hard for a short period of time you know will end soon, and you wish it, go for the extra work. But if you make constant hard work a habit, it will eat your life away.
And as GeorgieLove said, only you can answer. And realize the answer may be different at different times.

  6. Oh I love this post. I battle the same questions all the time. It's so nice to visit with others who are on the same journey. Glad you have found an answer for now.

  7. Bravo! What a brave woman to stick by your principles, when it would be so easy to get caught up in the selling frenzy. Your creative process is so closely linked to your soul I believe it deserves the time. The buyers will always be there.
