eco friendly- my arse!

You know what (else) really peeves me? Those eco- friendly new houses. There is a show on Thursday nights at 6pm called Worlds Greenest Homes. Clearly the ABC thinks we can be fooled into thinking this is just like Grand Designs- which readers of this blog - and many of you share the sentiment -know that no one can replace Kevin.
But aside from the voice of the host - I don't know why it irritates me so much- tone? pitch? I am not sure... is it nasally ?- I don't know.. I just find the show so ridiculous. They showcase these houses that are absolutely monstrous in size quite often a couple with no children will be living in a 4 bedroom house with a studio/ office each but because it is 'eco- friendly' it is deemed good. Are they having us on??? We are made to feel like these people are eco- warriors- hero's of some kind because they have built these "green"houses. But really all they have done is build a McMansion size house (see above)- whacked a very small solar system on the roof- which would no way be able to support even the lighting in one of these monstrosities, or they have a tiny little water tank- that again wouldn't even cover a couple of loads of laundry and we are suppose to applaud these people because they have built some thing so amazing!!!

It does my head in. Not ONCE have I ever seen a composting toilet. Never. Not once have I ever seen a house that relies entirely on the rain for its water. Never. Nor a house that is not connected to the grid... yes, ok its a start at least they are trying, making an effort... but its almost like they are doing it entirely for the kudos. They still drive around in massive four wheel drives and pollute the earth in a million other ways by massive consumption of disposable crap. ( I don't know about that last bit but lets just say for arguments sake) Its like green for points. It reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaalllllllly annoys me.
Ahhh. I feel better now..............just bring back Grand Designs. Please.

  1. As a fellow Kevin fan, I'm right there with you Chooky. I saw a snippet of one episode and came over all vomity at the self congratulatory smug of the couple living in NY and requiring three, did I say three? I'm pretty sure it was three, bathrooms. Vile and bile.

  3. Hey I too have just found you and totally totally agree. Love Grand Designs and Kevin. And when they have had eco houses on, no song and dance, just 'real' people trying to do their best. And those who couldn't give a crap, well what ever, at least they at not pretending to be something they are not. xox

  4. Kevin, the thinking girl's little bit of crumpet!

And I hear ya sista on the world's greenest homes, have watched a couple of these shows with my jaw gradually seeping to my kneecaps. Can't work out what was more awful the sheer enormity of the dwellings or the self-congratulatory herbal hipsters themselves.
ps so glad you loved Peggy

  6. I totally agree.

But I have to tell you that for the first time they DID have a composting toilet on last week. But it doesn't count anyway because it was one that Kevin already did! It was the house of the charcoal burner, you know, the one that has to get demolished when he dies? Anyway, it was nice to see it again even if they did totally cheat.

No-one can replace Kevin, even if he is always exceedingly skeptical of all the greenie homes.

    Cheers,
    PK
    - sorry, I am going to have to sign as Anon becuase I only lurk on everyone's blogs I don't have one myself. I had to apologise though because I reckon it comes across as pretty rude.

  8. I've just stumbled upon your lovely blog...yes I couldn't agree more! The host is a little too nice to everyone he meets too...makes me cringe. Some of those houses are AWFUL and so not green! I hate the fact that they pat themselves on the back for having some new fancy 'green' building material or gadget - yet there's no compost, chooks, vege garden, water tanks or greywater system in sight! Pfft. I can't help but watch it though, in the hope there will be something inspring..I guess I'd better dream on!
