Well, there was some crying and swearing and general carry on over here yesterday not only after the $132 average softie discovery ( scroll day for tantrum in full flight) but when I attempted to master the zipper.
How hard could it be?.............. well maybe if I had of read some of the millions of tutorials available.......................maybe if I had of eaten breakfast, hence, not being hangry ( hungry and angry) when it was attempted........................maybe I should have not used fabric I had painstakenly embroidered as this only amplified the anxiety...maybe I should have actually looked at a pillow with a zipper and seen how simply it can be done.......maybe if I was the type of person to follow instructions...maybe if I didn't always think " I will be able to work it out as I go...make it up along the way etc ..."....maybe if I didn't approach things with a bull at a gate attitude...just maybe I could have saved myself a lot of pain... but then, I wouldn't be me....but I learnt - eventually - all the things not to do when sewing a zipper and now feel the next one will be fabulously neat. So here it is:

Thanks to this lovely fabric Cathy gave me that matches perfectly.
Here is the back taken from a huge distance to keep me from being completely embarrassed about the disgraceful state of it and mortified that people reading this may have considered actually buying somethingsewn from me.... but it does open and close- which really is the whole point.

Function over form, wins out every time! And lets face it people will be looking at the front .... which is absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI think we have all been there with zippers...looks great from the front and works so sounds like a win to me ;o)
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to sewing I am the same way..Grrr..It looks beautiful despite the frustrations
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your rather elevated shot of the back of the cushion - it's made me laugh out loud!!!!!! The front looks amazing and from what I can see the back looks pretty good too!! I didn't want to go through what you did earlier this week so I made the back of the cushion with button opening instead! x
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous - the fabric is a perfect match. Who looks at the back of cushions anyway?
ReplyDeleteSometimes the process out ways the product... but it has a dac dac so you get bonus points!!
ReplyDeletexo Steph
Wow. You are tall.
ReplyDeleteLove it! And hate zippers. With a vengeance. And a passion.
ReplyDeleteIt looks brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried putting zippers in cushions yet - just do the easy fold over!
I saw this embroidery over on Feeling Stitchy and immediately started making my own. It's going to be cushion, too, for a little friend of mine. Thanks for the inspiration (I thanked Pepper Stitches, too)! Here is mine, http://maureencracknellhandmade.blogspot.com/ , if you have a second to look.
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
Your funny.....did you know when we click on that little photo it goes up FULL SCREEN!!! lol. It looks great....cheers to you for having a go!!xx
ReplyDeleteLooks great- super cute. Cushions are next on my list so be prepared to witness the bodgiest of the bodgy. And thanks for introducing the word 'hangry' to my vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteThe front looks sensational! I desperately need new cushions, I’m too cheap to buy them and the though of zippers or button holes is preventing me from putting making them on my to do list! So the daggy old ones are staying put for now…
ReplyDeleteyour embroidery looks amazing ... and who looks at the back of cushions except for critical MILs. next time will be the bomb.

I hardly ever read instructions....only when putting flat-pack furniture together after many failed attempts. I think you have done a wonderful job on the cushion.....just think of the zipper as a feature rather than something that you were trying to hide.
ReplyDeleteit looks ace, love the bug! {and much better than my cushions where the zips are hanging on by a thread from where the dog has had a go at them!}
ReplyDeleteGreat pillow... and I think we must be sewing-hack buddies seperated at birth, from the description you offer about your approach to trying new things. (So there you go, no more excuses for not trying a quilt. Now perhaps I should go and try a zipper!)
ReplyDeleteLove the cushion. As long as it's comfy then nothing else matters.
ReplyDeleteit is nice..whats the trouble with everyone and zips lately? i still am too chicken to give it a go..
ReplyDeleteLOL. Despite all the swearing (and I'm with you on the ridiculously priced softie AND the zippers), your cushion has turned out beautifully. There's a great tute over at houseonhillroad.com for putting a zipper in a pillow.
ReplyDeletecome on..how hard can a zipper be..hehee.
ReplyDeletenow my dear, that is exactly what we love about you, that you make us feel like we are sitting there listening to your sewing antics and trying so very hard not to giggle.
Love the embroidery, gorgeous fabric (wonderful tinniegirl) and I just love visiting you ♥
I think that the front looks divine and my nan said never trust anyone that turns over your work to inspect it
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh and sympathise with everything at the same time! I cannot do a decent zip either.. it's the ruin of most projects, especially clothes to the extent that I have not made anything to wear for years!
ReplyDeleteTutes on zips are fine, but when it comes to sewing a simple straight line over edge and zip - nah, nothing doing!
;) Emma x
Oh dear...Cindy's Nan better not run into me. I inspect - like crazy - everything. But more to see the how rather than the neat. Couldn't care less about the neat.
ReplyDeleteYour cushion looks great.
How cool!
ReplyDeleteI totally relate to that analysis of self!
After reading Leonie's comment I just had to click on the small photo and then I realised that you could zoom in too!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fine. Okay - not perfect - but certainly fine. Especially for a first attempt.
I adore your embroidery and think I might be stitching a beetle soon too. I love it that much!!!
Hi Cath the zip looks fine to me! I've been a bit quiet lately - work is way too busy and haven't had a chance to blog hop! I've been thinking about madeit lately as well - how is it so far? I have just dicovered that the girl who owns it lives just up the road from me and is a friend of my hairdresser...what a small world!
ReplyDeleteLove that pillow! Even the zip is superb! xo m.
