Given that a percentage of the population are thick... WHY are car manufactureres allowed to continue to make cars, any cars that can travel at 220km an hour? The speed limit in Australia as far as I know is 110km maximum (correct me if I am wrong here) so WHY can't they somehow change the speedo's before they are imported? Do they honestly think that people will not be tempted to drive at stupid speeds if it just means pressing their foot a little harder?
Please discuss.
I used to work for a manufacturing company that supplied the automotive manufacturers and I'm afraid that it all comes down to manufacturing costs - it's just too expensive to make changes for particular markets. So it's all just OSFA!
ReplyDeleteMaybe they should think about introducing speed limiting devices (like the ones used on trucks) for hoon drivers?
Yes, if we could limit the speeds kids could travel at I'm sure a lot of lives would have been spared.
ReplyDeleteMy son (8) actually asked me yesterday why the speedo's go up to 220-40 when the speed limit is 110. What could I say? I hope he is one of the sensible ones when he is older...xo
ReplyDeleteThanks Curly Pops for the explanation- I have wondered the same myself many a time...
ReplyDeletethanks Cam for the explain.
ReplyDeletewho knows why the hoons do what they do though.
a couple of weeks ago on the news a 3yr old girl was killed in a car accident because a hoon lost control & smashed into this poor family's car. Amelie asked what happened..we explained, but how can you really understand it. it was close to where we live too.
♥
Or maybe right back at the manufacturing process they should limit the cars to 120kms??
ReplyDeleteam sooo with you.
ReplyDeleteAnd roads should have some sort of 'limiting GPS signal device' which controls speed due to weather/school hours etc.
We can get someone to the moon, we can't seem to put a plug in a hole in an oil well, but this seems d0-able?
No surprise there that Ms Pops is the one with the answer. I've been making similar 'der' noises about road tolls and that particular palaver for yonks. The sort of frustration that gets me all foot stamping.
ReplyDeleteThank you for providing the explanation Ms. Curly Pops! but i'm still left with the question of WHY?...
ReplyDeleteliving in Los Angeles, CA - home of traffic and speeding cars - i don't understand why car companies continue to increase speed capabilities in automotive vehicles. And SO MANY continue to talk on their cell phones without a hands-free device, as required BY LAW here!!! This to me is a sure recipe for multiple disasters =-(
Now Ms. Pops recommendation of speed limiting devices is on the best things I've heard of in a LONG time, as far as driving goes =-)
I've always wondered if they can retro-fit a speed limiter to a truck...why not cars? Surely the cost-benefit would be in saved lives...
ReplyDeleteI don't think they have them anymore - but when I lived in the NT there were open speed limits in most of the regional areas.
ReplyDeleteI was young and silly... so I will confess to have a great time getting my little datsun blue bird to the top of the dial - not sure that the car enjoyed it though - it literally screamed and shook like it was going to fall apart.
Now that I am older and more mature I, of course, think that it is ridiculous to have such a great speed. I now also wear sneakers on NYE and go for warmth over sexy when going out on a winter's night... how things have changed :)
I guess it wouldn't be so fun on Top Gear, but I completely agree for the normal run of the mill car there is no need for them to go over, in your case 110km/h or ours 70mph, give maybe an extra 10mph to get round the numpties who sit in the middle lane on motorways at 65mph.... Although that said, although the speedos say they can go to say (in my case my UK Hyundai Santa Fe) 140mph I very much doubt it could get anywhere near it.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for mobiles... they're illegal here in the UK too, for what good it does, the number of muppets I see using them. And as for smokers, changing cds and the rest!!! sheesh.
The best speed restrictors in the UK are 'average speed' cameras on motorways - EVERYONE is at or under the limit - and on the way into towns and villages signs that light up if you're going over the limit. I love to challenge these by going say 29mph in a 30 zone and swear at them when they still light up...te he!!
Oh yes, sorry, I forgot to mention cruise control - this is brilliant at maintaining the speed limit on motorways or major roads at any speed over 30mph. I use mine all the time.
