My Creative Space

You know when you decide to do something and think to yourself  "I will just whip that up it will only take half an hour" and then you fumble and fuss (and swear) and it ends up taking AGES. No? Well I do. In fact my general bull- at- a- gate- more- confidence- than- actual- skill -attitude can lead me to far flung places.... so when I had the idea of making a post box for Busy because she  is pretty into the idea of collecting the post which , because our postbox is about 500m from our front door - down very steep muddy dodgy driveway then over bridge, up steep hill, over cattle grid and up steep hill again - we only collect the post when we are driving in and out past it.

I decided to combine the postbox with the curtains I have been meaning to make to go around her bed - instead of the less than aesthetically pleasing old sheets I have been using, and the child actually requested white curtains ( *gushing* she really did come from my womb!!!)

here are the curtains and here is the postbox...

I planned on back stitching the word mail but decided for a quicker machine embroidery. After reading Ginas' tutorial I had a go , I actually think it looks better in real life than in the dodgy picture taken in fading light yesterday. I urge you to try this thread sketching , I am keen to do some more at some stage.
She loved it and immediately put some treasure* in the postbox.
For more Creative Spaces head over to the house of Kootoyoo, Thanks Kirsty, I love Thursdays.
*random objects that are important to a 3 year old like buttons, hair clips, pieces of paper with small pictures on them, bits of string, broken pieces from toys etc etc etc......

  1. Oh so wonderful. Collecting mail is so much fun. Great idea.
I've been meaning to have a go at thread sketching for ages... but just haven't got to it yet. One dayl... always one day.

  3. What a wonderful bed!!! With a letter box and EVERYTHING!!!!
Does she use the underneath like a little cubby house?
We are thinking of doing something similar for Jake.
Is it a pain to change the sheets up top?

  6. I love it! Pony Girl was in the room while I was looking at your post and she was quite intrigued. She loves the bed and mailbox of course but wanted to know where the little girl was. So, I scrolled down to your previous post to show her. She wants very much to come to "Ostraylya" and meet Busy right away! She wanted me to "write to her Mama and tell her that I want to play with her little girl tomorrow." I told her I would do just that.

  9. You have made a fabulous addition to her spectacular bed. It’s the sort of set up I dreamed of as a kid. She will love it more and more as she grows. I wonder if I can persuade My Curly Guy that this is the sort of bed our Little Guy needs. He already has a perfectly functional (but really boring) ensemble that was Curly Guys before he left home, so I don’t like my chances. And I don’t have any friends who have the right skills to whip one of these up for me...I mean Little Guy!!

  12. Lovely idea - and totally get how cool it is to get the mail.
I've done a little machine stitching lately, but have stabbed myself as I get too confident too quickly. So I can only stitch on fabrics that will hide the blood... or perhaps I shouldn't have the glass of wine first...

  13. I've been meaning to use Gina's tutorial too....any month now.

I'm sure the mail box will bring plenty more joy, my kids have one on their cubby & when it's not full of sand there are all sorts of letters posted & received from it.

I'm dreaming of a similar bed for William. You made yours though, didn't you? Love it.

  25. I know exactly what you mean, when starting something you really don't know how much time is going to take. But when you end up with such a great project on your hands, I believe it is well worth it.
