I thought it would be nice to get to know the author Toni Coward a little bit so I did an interview with her:
As a mum to three littles how do you balance mothering and sewing/ book writing?
Well, I have to admit that some days it doesn't really feel like I have much of a balance happening! Like everyone else though (regardless of whether you work in a paid job or not), we have our good days and our bad days. I think the key to success is not to expect too much from yourself and really try and go with the flow. The way I balance life changes from month to month (or day to day!) depending on the ages and stages of the children and other things we have going on in our lives. For example, at the moment Tommy is almost 18 months old, and I really think that the most difficult aged of a child to try and sew around is between 1 and 2 years old. So at the moment, very little sewing gets done during the time he is awake, which means more late nights for me! I've been through it with the other two though and know that in another 6 months time I will be able to start doing a little more during the day so am just enjoying the time I have with him being 18 months at the moment. The key to me actually accomplishing things though is writing lists - and lots of them! I have an ongoing master list of "Things To Do" and every day I write myself a daily list of things that I want to accomplish during that day, choosing the most pressing items from the master list (I know, it sounds so regimented, but it works for me!!) Writing things down and referring to my list constantly during the day really helps me to get things done - it also helps me to not "bite off more than I can chew" and give myself unrealistic expectations. Do you sew for the process of making something or the finished project?
It depends on the project. Usually I sew for the finished project - because I want to create something in particular, whether it be a new pattern design or cushions for the couch. Sometimes I get sick of sewing for a reason though and want to sew "just for fun". I always have a quilt in the works or other long-term projects to fall back on when I want to sew for fun, projects with no deadlines or expectations, that I can just slowly take my time and enjoy the process.· Are you a neat organised- all- fabric- separated- by- colour- in - the -lovely- neat- studio- type- of sewer? Or are you a fly- by- the- seat- of- the- pants-fabric- and sewing stuff- all-over-the-house kind of sewer?
Usually the neat kind. I sort my fabric by ranges and everything has a place. When I am in the middle of a project, though, things do get a little crazy and I leave bits and pieces lying around everywhere! Not to mention the long pieces of elastic and fabric and spools of thread that the kids have fun playing with while I am distracted!! Once I have finished the project though, I religiously clean everything up and get the studio back to proper order before I allow myself to start sewing again. I don't like to start a project in a disorganised environment.
· Where and when did you learn to sew?My first sewing lessons took place when I was a young girl and my grandmother and I would sew fleecy trackies together!! I thought they were awesome :) I have always loved to create and sewed until I was an older teenager when I lost interest completely (probably around the same time that I took part in the dreaded sewing and textiles class at high school) and vowed that I would never touch a sewing machine again! It wasn't until I had children of my own that I really got back into sewing again. Kids are fun to sew for and a great starting point for someone who doesn't have a lot of confidence. My interest for sewing really turned into a passion about 5 years ago when I realised that there was so many gorgeous fabric ranges to choose from that I could create unique clothing for my children and myself and I haven't looked back since!
I think it would be really very nice, if you are new to this blog to have a little look around, maybe introduce yourself, you know not just leave a one liner on this post , click follow and never come back again....it is nice to have manners.....if you just comment and leave, it makes me feel a bit.....used...and that is not nice....

Great interview Cath. So true about that 1 -2 year toddler thing. This looks like a lovely book.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic interview Cath.
ReplyDeleteToni's right - sewing for children is a great place to start in terms of boosting your confidence and just having fun. I think her grandmother was really onto something when taught Toni's to sew trackies... fleece is such a good fabric to start with it doesn't slip and slide everywhere, and so much better to have a project that you can wear than say a pillow case that was the first project they taught my class in "texitle and design". (A class that had no design in it what so ever!!!)
Thanks for the chance to win... you've had some great giveaways lately... and once again I have my fingers crossed really really tightly!!!
What a wonderful idea to interview the creator of this beautiful book. I loved reading her answers and could relate to many.
ReplyDeletePlease include me in your giveaway :)
Ooh awesome! The little cape is so cute :D
ReplyDeleteThis book looks gorgeous. I so understand losing interest in sewing after enduring compulsory and really bad sewing classes in High School, I later picked it up again hoping to to maybe study Fashion design Huh..wasn't meant to be (ended up as an Interior designer)..so after that tangent, this book looks very inpsiring non-the-less :-)

ReplyDeleteSounds like I am in the minority - I had a FANTASTIC sewing teacher in high school, and she is the reason I am still sewing 20 years later. :) :)

loved what you said about manners.
ReplyDeletecouldn't agree more!

Firstly, congratulations on a lovely site, but your interview with Toni from Make It Perfect was very informative, but it made me feel as if I was sitting enjoying a coffee and listening to a friend describe their day, loved it. And I also subscribed to your blog, love a good find at the end of a day. Keep up the great work.
ReplyDeleteHi! I love your blog is one of the "must keep up to" :) I'm starting my adventures in sewing and knitting and I really enjoy embroidering too! I think it's great you make this giveaways with the background information. And is funny to acknoledge that your blog reaches Portugal! Thanks!
ReplyDeletei loe to sew for my girls. This would be a perfect addition! I would love to win one! thanks much! jhales_finance at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteMy mum taught me to sew, so this year I I'm making handmade christmas presents for our whole family including my sisters 7 children, and mums 9 great grandchildren. I am making them out of fabrics my mum had lovingly saved all these years in her stash, I am trying to chose individual projects that are just for them.. She passed away in September leaving me her fabric stash, so I am making things so that everyone can have something from her, especially this year, our first christmas without her.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun interview. I have never been on your blog before but I will be coming back. So much fun. Also a mama of two little ones, and I'm learning to sew. This book looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWill cross my fingers for good luck on this giveaway! Thanks for the chance.

I love seeing crafty blogger moms take their skills and jump into the 'real' world to spread the joy there, too! Thanks for the interview and giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cath and Toni for the giveaway. It is always lovely to read about these amazing achievers and realize that they are down to earth and not so different from the rest of us :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't just comment and leave ya Cath - I love your blog!!
ReplyDeletePS - I love craft books just as much!!
I'd love to have a copy of the book. I love to sew for my grandchildren. I enjoyed looking thru your blog. Thanks for the great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great interview - thankyou. I follow and visit (when I remember:) there are so many blogs out there now.
ReplyDeleteLove you blog and your creations:) And of course the book looks amazing.
this book has so many fabulous projects - I'd love to gift some of those slippers!
ReplyDeleteI'm jane and have been reading your blog for a few months - feel weird commenting but I guess it's even weirder to not!
ps I think it's great you're sharing your opinion about asylum seekers - it's definitely contentious and it's important that people share their opinions honestly rather than just hiding behind the government!
Thanks so much for the chance to have a book. I sew for my kids...just don't get enough hours in my day to even make a dent in my list....lucky that they are now starting to sew too :-)
ReplyDeleteHi there! Ive been reading your blog for about month now and I adore it you have such a fun blog voice:) How exciting that you get to peek at Toni's new book I am madly waiting for it to arrive at my LFS!!
ReplyDeleteThanx for sharing this great interview also ;)
It is the first time I visit this blog. The first but not the last! Thanks for the fiveaway.
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely book and a really good interview. How cool to be able to interview Toni. I am trying to get back into sewing as I have a grand-daugher who is 2 now, I have material, pattern etc, but haven't got the oooomph to cut them out, I have made a plan of things to do and sewing some pyjama's for her is on the list, so hopefully before christmas I can get them made. I knit mainly, but read some sewing blogs which usually get me motivated, but I have to make the time. Next weekend I will try.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great interview. I wish I had a studio to keep tidy and to sew in rather than my small corner of family room.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway chance :)
Hello There!
ReplyDeleteThought I'd say hello and either say thank you or be ticket off at you! Since my 15y old daughter has discovered your blog she's been trying to hog my sewing machines as she now sees sewing isn't just for old faddy duddies like her mum! LOL
(ok so it is a THANK YOU!! )
Hi there :) I'm Nic and I'm new to your blog - I followed a link from Toni's blog page to the review of her new book :) I love her patterns! I've made several Make it Perfect patterns before for my two sons and I think they are fab - well written and easy to follow. I can't wait to get my sticky paws on the book - I've been excited about it ever since it was announced! I love the interview with Toni. I'm another one whose daytime sewing is a little limited. My youngest is 10.5 months and into EVERYTHING which means I can't get anything done while he's awake. But as Toni says, I just enjoy him while he's this age :) Now I'm off to have a look around your blog! Thank you!
