All is good here, despite my lack of blogging, in fact I am surprised I haven't got a phone call from my mate LC to ask if everything is ok as I haven't updated my blog for a while. I haven't had a lot to say. We passed the halfway mark and had a the 20 weeks scan and everything is looking good. Have felt the baby move etc... all those things have been happening as well as the mood swings teariness and general hormonal feelings etc with growing a baby. You know.
I have been spending a lot of time thinking about sleep arrangements come October when we get our new house mate. With Busy who was a dream baby all was easy except she refused to sleep in a cot, or more to the point once she was asleep she was nontransferable. You couldn't move her therefore there was no way of getting her into the cot so after trying for a few weeks we decided it was easier to put a mattress on the floor in her room and I could feed her to sleep and then creep away which is what I did. It worked really well for us, but I missed my husband.
I never considered putting Busy in with us when she was tiny - as it made me too nervous -she was in a bassinet next to the bed for the first 6 weeks but I also didn't like her being in another room from me as it felt too far away. So the mattress on the floor was an easy solution.
what did you do for sleep time with your babies?
what worked for you?
any ideas I may not have considered?
Bubba Joe has always slept in his cot in his own room - from day one. There was a couple of times he slept in the car carrier in our room when he was sick but that's about it.
ReplyDelete... I did want a bassinet when we first bought him home from the hospital but we were so lax on space it wasn't a good idea.
And besides, for all the planning you do now.... it'll all probably change the minute you bring bub home anyway!!!
Number two slept in our bed, it worked out the best way for Mr H and Miss 3 to get sleep and for me to sleep the most I could during the night. As she grew I would put her to sleep in her bassinet and when she woke for the first feed (whatever time that was) I would bring her in, feed in bed and then we all slept through the night. Over time the first feed gets later and later. She moved into her cot, but still fed overnight, sometimes she woke at 11 and came in, other nights it might be 4. By 18 months she stopped waking up through the night and slept through in her own bed (mostly!).
ReplyDeleteReally, do whatever works for you and bub, sleep is the cure for so many day time things!

These illustrations are fabulous! So funny :) I think the baby decides what he/she wants. When we had our eldest daughter we were living in a tiny one-bed flat in London and thought she would sleep with us... but no, she really didn't like that. I think on those drawings she'd be the snow angel... except we'd fall off the sides ;) We ended up having to buy a cot and squeeze it into the room somehow. Second daughter wasn't given the bed option I think because we were used to it not being an option, but luckily she settled happily for the cot. Neither fell asleep from feeding so we put them to bed awake and talked to them until our scintillating conversation sent them off like a log ;) If there's one thing I remember about babies, it's that you cannot plan how it will be... that and the second child will be totally different in every way to the first! Have fun dreaming Cath... the rest will fall into place :) Kx
ReplyDeleteWe used a First Years bed thing for our daughter when she was really small. It's like a basket with solid sides and goes on your bed in the middle. It's a bit uncomfy but you don't need to worry about rolling over. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it!
ReplyDeleteI had specific ideas on how my first child would be raised before I brought her home. Over the next few months, she firmly protested against each idea I had. The crib was packed up and shoved in the attic before she turned 1 because she refused to sleep there. And despite being against bringing her to our bed, that is exactly where she sleeps to this day. So, my advice would be to wait for baby before you decide. And enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kylie, the baby decides! You try different things, but if baby isn't happy then it isn't going to work. Cohen slept in his own room from the first day we got home and was an easy sleeper. But I would have to go into his room several times a night and sit in the rocking chair to feed him. This time around, for my own sleep, I decided to get a bassinet for Emerson to sleep in next to our bed. I love it. Only, she is three months old and so long that I think she will grow out of it very soon. Sooner than I had hoped! :)
ReplyDeletePS. All my friends who co-sleep swear by it.
we are converted co sleepers over here, the first three slept mostly in their own cot in our bedroom and the next two slept with us which was so much more convenient.

Ah the sleeping dilemma. I tried all the different methods, with my lot and came to the conclusion that each baby is different and what suits one might not suit another! Mostly I had a cot next to the bed when they were very small and off to their own room (or shared as I had many more children LOL)when they slept through the night which with my daughter was a very, very long time!
ReplyDeletei/we co slept with both our children. i like it like that. my partner made up a crib the same height as our bed and attached it to the bed to give us a bit more room... definitely a special moment waking up together xx
ReplyDeleteJust go with the flow and do what's best for you and Bub - like others have said you will work it out. My son slept in the bed with us right from day 1 - I couldn't bear to be away from him! Over time we worked out what was best for us all - even through our separation from his father - he needed the comfort of being near Mum. He has just turned 19 and still crawls into bed with his Mum when he can - but thankfully he no longer stays there for the night!!!! - but sometimes it's for long chats in to the night, and I love that he feels comfortable doing that.
ReplyDeleteHow about a mattress on the floor in your room? We have co-slept with all our boys, but when we make the move out to their own room we start with a mattress on the floor in our room, which is then moved to their room when the night time feeds have dropped off. We have a king size bed now so we can fit all five of us when we need to. I love snuggling with my babies, but do need my space back after a while.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying a bednest. They are made in the UK and are a crib that attaches to the side of the bed with a pop down screen. I was lucky to pick one up second hand and the lady I bought it from raves about it. Check it out on http://www.bednest.com/.
ReplyDeleteBest of health to you
