Please read the following post in a high pitched whiney voice:

I was just reading a 2005 edition of  Vogue Living ( I was having a coffee at Chefs work)  and there was a really boring softie in there. It was the shape of a woman , very simple shape with a couple of buttons sewn on and some quite boring fabric, about 30cm tall  it was $132( pitch of voice goes up here) It actually makes me get tears in my eyes when I see this..... $132. Where are these people that would pay that obscene amount!!!????  I personally think my softies and many many many others made by people who read this blog,  are so much better!! Why do some people get to charge this much and others of us feel like we toil away for nothing.... trying to keep our prices reasonable , make a profit and also not making them out of reach for everyone.... I having a big fat its NOT FAIR moment. Foot stamping, door slamming and generally stomping to follow...

  1. Well, obviously Cath, if it is more expensive, it's OBVIOUSLY SO MUCH BETTER. Sheesh. I love affordable! I turn stuff away from GL if it's not something that is priced accessibly to people!

  2. Because.
Isn't that the worst answer ever? I see examples of this all the time (I live in a very crafty city), and it is always a bit unsettling to see the work of a mediocre few go for a mint - and the work of dedicated talents never break even.
I think it must belong in the "Who You Know" category. Also, I am a terrible PR & marketing person...so that could count for something.

Does Frank Black have a kid? Send him one of your softies. You could wind up cornering the retro indie hip rocker market! Just don't forget the little people.

  3. Just because something has a high price tag, doesn't mean that someone is actually going to PAY it, does it? And if anyne does pay it, well... that's their folly.

Your work is fab. Never doubt it.

  4. I hope that you're feeling ok now....... It's a horrible feeling. I hope that it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside just knowing how much your work is admired & appreciated. You should've stapled a business card to the article for other readers after you, lol. :)

  6. Aw, Cath...if you were the type to sell her softies for $132, we probably wouldn't like you anywhere near as much as we do! But I'm with Lola Nova---get your gorgeous softies out there to all and sundry, and let the chips fall where they will.

  7. i am with you. i always wonder the same thing when i see the prices for somethings in magazine, or even on etsy. i mean i know that our time is money but wow, is our time really worth that much!
i mean that is all i can figure. because i know that materials for some of those items couldn't have cost that much!! really.

  8. do people actually buy them though?!
i'd be interested to find out.

  9. Hmmm, I can understand that feeling. I make cushion covers from beautiful fabrics, Japanese linens and see similar ones in magazines for $80 each or more! I sell mine for $30 and find it hard to even sell one where I live from my shop. I think it has a lot to do with the demographics. People tend to pay more for things in cities and sometimes hand made is not appreciated as much in small industrial towns.
