My Creative Space: a robot, a wrapped rabbit, and a request

Thank you so much for everyone for voting for me in Plushie Palooza - Cam even tweeted it and Vic did a big blog post about it!! But the voting is still open and you can still vote by leaving a comment and I need lots and lots more votes!! My entry is a robot not unlike the one below. I have made a few custom ones from people wanting their own so I have decided to list one on Etsy... here he is....His name is Curtis.

I reckon he is pretty darn cute!

The response to the sew your own softie kits, Rafferty and Regina,  from my current wholesalers has been huge and very encouraging. Everyone who sees them loves them and since I have been working on them for about 5 months it is great to see them in the flesh.  I have taken new photos and am much happier with how they look now.

 

As well as the instructions you also get a little card so you can personalise each softie - this was feedback from Kate and her girls who were my official pattern testers.

I  have also changed the packaging and am much happier with it.

The perfect present for young sewers- all wrapped up and  ready to go straight under the tree!

I have been thinking a lot about packaging... what will be kind to the earth yet stop things getting dirty from grubby handprints in shops... I did want to just have the fabric of the rabbits and the instructions just all held together with a nice wooden dolly peg but everyone kept telling me they would be ruined in the shop. I have provided two made up Rabbits  for each wholesaler for display purposes. The other packaging just didn't look nice enough for retail, so this is the new improved packaging, plsu who doesn't love that red and white bakers twine!!

My Creative Space: ROBOT

A few weeks back Lou forwarded on to me a call for submissions for an upcoming plush event. I decided to get involved and since I last made robots for Vic- our resident robot expert, I thought I would ask her what she liked most about the rattles and use it as the basis for a giant robot plushie.

Of course his name is VICTOR and even though he has wheels he hovers just above the ground....

It is so nice working with felt, it is so forgiving, not shedding or fraying, every cut is neat, the colours are so great, I love it. I could have gone beserk with the dials and buttons....From antenna to wheels he is just over 40cms.
 I  actually have to give him away- that is part of the deal, so somone is going to win him....I will really be sad to see him go. I will let you how to enter to win him when I get more details. What do you think? Make more?

Robots for Vic

Lovely Vic from Punky and Me asked if I could make her new baby a rattle. Vic has not been having a great pregnancy the poor love so how could I refuse her? She asked if I could make it a  robot rattle. A robot- hmmmm how can I do that? Mind filled with self doubt...First stop flickr- nothing exciting there - other than these amazing softies discobots from Jodi. Mind whirring still, sketchbook at the ready....

Some ideas about cogs and screens and buttons and screws... decided I would make them out of felt as I just ordered a whole heap of wool felt with the idea of making gnomes for Busy's preschool but was severely intimidated by the neatness of Tania's  blanket stitch, however I thought I would give it a crack. I remembered how much I love working with this beautiful wool felt. And thanks to a post a million years ago from Sally about invisible thread! Who knew!? Well I didn't and new it would come in handy one day and it was perfect for sewing all the knobs and buttons onto this. Thanks Sally.

So Vic, I am holding my breath and hoping this is what you meant... here is your choice of robots...the green one was the first one but then I got on a roll and kept going... .

And to everyone else....should I keep making them? Should I put them on etsy? Critique please...( be kind I am fragile)
